Kelvin was born in an impoverished background. He loved reading books. He had a daytime job and usually read his books in the evening. The income from the job was too little to purchase any books or candles to lit during the night. 
One day, Kelvin discovered that his neighbor's candles could dimly light his room. So he figured, why not dig a small hole in the wall so that the light from the candles could penetrate easily into my room and evenly light it? He did that, and from that day forward, Kelvin consumed the candlelight in the next-door house to read his books every night until it went out.

Eventually, he finished reading all the books he had and had no other books to read. So, he decided to work in a wealthy man's house with no payment. One day, the rich man asked Kelvin why he didn't want to accept his money. Kelvin replied that he only needed his books. The rich man agreed to give Kelvin his books as a substitute for the payment he would receive for his work. Kelvin read all the books given to him and became one of the best scholars of that era.
